Musikfest, good food, and Valley’s downtowns

Allentown continues to lag somewhat. There are, however, several bright spots, and I believe that Allentown can be turned around as Easton and Bethlehem are. The Fegley family, for example, has done a noteworthy job building the Allentown Brew Works. It is breathtakingly beautiful, and it simply has to be seen to be believed. There are three huge floors, and each floor is more gorgeous than the next. One can only hope that enough people can be drawn into downtown Allentown to make this place a success. The Bethlehem Brew Works, owned by the same family, is a smashing success. However, downtown Bethlehem and downtown Allentown are two very different places. 140 beer lovers join Brew Works’ mug club

In another sign that the Allentown Brew Works is growing a customer base, the brew pub and restaurant sold 140 mugs Wednesday night for its in-house mug club. About 200 were offered, and the owners receive discounts and other benefits, says brew pub owner Jeff Fegley. No. 1 sold for $125 for the year.

Allentown Brew Works now serves up music

As first impressions go, one word immediately came to mind as I followed the hostess to our table at the Allentown Brew Works recently — and that was ”large.”

Now, as the name implies, this restaurant is also a brewery, and making beer requires sizeable tanks that take up part of the vast space that used to be Harold’s Furniture on Hamilton Street. Still, there’s lots of room left over, considering the four-floor brew pub — which includes a basement lounge and top-floor, private-event banquet room — seats 400 people.

Allentown Brew Works to Sponsor Force

Allentown, Pa. - The Philadelphia Force have announced that they have formed a sponsorship relationship with the Allentown Brew Works for the remainder of the 2007 National Pro Fastpitch season. The newly opened establishment will be the official host restaurant of the Philadelphia Force.

Scene has to admit that at first we were not among those who caught on to the current beer craze. Despite childhood memories of that heated contest for the title of Miss Rheingold 1959 (a late-lamented brew of my late-lamented youth), beer is largely remembered as a college-era beverage, suds of Bud consumed in mass quantities on Saturday and repented of at leisure on Sunday.
