WHAT is a firkin ale? A firkin is a small keg, holds about 9 gallons or so of cask-conditioned, 50°F beer.

WHY a firkin ale? If you love beer then this is your chance to experience drinking a real ale! Open up your senses to the hop and malt flavors released by drinking a beer from a hand-drawn firkin served at a respectable temperature. Our brewers then work their magic to give each cask its own special character.

About Charity Cask Night

A craft brewery draws its character and strength from its community, but it can also give back to the community and help create positive change. That’s the idea behind the series of benefit events taking place at the Bethlehem Brew Works every month. Each Thursday, beginning at 5 p.m., Bethlehem Brew Works head brewer Beau Baden offers a hand pumped, cask-conditioned ale from a 10-gallon barrel called a firkin. The cask is always a special, one-of-a-kind beer connoisseur’s treat. It is available only until it runs dry, which could be just hours (or less) after it’s tapped.

Since June of 2006, the entire proceeds of the Bethlehem Brew Works first Thursday’s “first firkin” of the month has been donated to a local non-profit organization. Better still, the non-profit recipient has the opportunity to present literature and banners, and have representatives on hand for an informal Q&A and info-session about their community work.

Previous charities that have benefited from the Brew Works event have been the United Way of the Greater Lehigh

Valley, the Historic Bethlehem Partnership, Communities In Schools, WDIY Public Radio, KidsPeace, The Allentown Symphony, TeenCentral.net, Center of Animal Health & Welfare of Northampton County, Miller-Keystone Blood Center, Celtic Cultural Alliance, “Gift of Life Family House”, “Walk for Autism Now” – Autism Speaks and the Alliance for Building Communities, Center for Animal Health & Welfare, Civic Theatre of Allentown, LLS, The Barn, Celtic Cultural Alliance, Casa Guadalupe Center Capital Campaign

Charity Cask, September 2 – “Sling Load” – The giant CH-47 copters can hoist up huge vehicles and equipment for deployment to the field; in this cask, our CH-47 IPA brings aboard a load of extra hops for ‘operation pint drain.’

September 9th - “Banshee” Celtic classic is coming…and Irish folklore tells us of this female spirit from the Otherworld. She’ll be wailing about this awesome pumpkin raisin ale when it kicks!

September 16 TBA

September 23 – “Carbomb” - For the eve of Celtic Classic, the fabulous cocktail inspires this cask! No need to rush a pint of this Irish Creme Oatmeal Stout except to get another before it runs dry.

Previous Casks

2009

February 5th · “Hair of the Dog” – A naturally carbonated Belgian Stout. Fermented with sweet orange peel, a touch of honey and Belgian yeast.

February 12th · “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre” – Golden Ale fermented with Brown Sugar and Red Hots Cinnamon Candy (remember the candy you ate when you were a kid?) Come take a walk down memory lane.

February 26th · “100% MAGIC HEMP” – Our Fegley’s ESB fermented with Hemp adds a magical and nutty aroma.

March 5th – “Give-a-Pint Raspberry Wit” At the Brew Works, this is another way we “Donate a Pint” to the community’s only blood supplier…Miller-Keystone Blood Center! Brewed with chamomile, orange peel and coriander, fermented with raspberry to create a smooth citrus finish.

March 12th – “Snake Oil” The Oatmeal Stout fermented with brown sugar and French Oak Chips marinated with real Kentucky Bourbon. A BBW favorite cask.

March 19th – “Hop-To-It Copper Kettle” An American Style Pale Ale aged for several weeks in our traditional firkin. This beer has been dry-hopped; our brewers added an extra handful of hops to this cask just to bring it to the next level.

March 26th – “Old School IPA” – In order for beer to make the long trip around Africa to India, the British over hopped their ales to preserve the beer for its long trip. Doing it ol’ school, we give you this authentic India Pale Ale dry hopped with Amarillo hops.

April 2nd – for the Celtic Cultural Alliance (CCA). Brewer Lewis Thomas is creating a one of a kind cask: “The Celtic Classic Ale,” which is a Scottish Ale fermented with Irish whiskey soaked chips. A blending of flavors from two great Celtic nations!

April 9th — “Heretic” An over-hopped ESB reminiscent of an India Brown Ale. Our Brewers decided to over-hop our traditional ESB to be alittle blasphemous this time of year.

April 16th — “Peeps’ Porter” The fun & flavors of your Easter basket come together in a smooth Porter with hints of marshmallow vanilla & chocolate.

April 23rd — “Dry Heat” The Brewers are chopping at the bit for warmer weather so they decided to bring the heat by adding some chili peppers to a cask of our Valley Golden Ale. Don’t miss this one!

April 30th — “Mary Queen of Scots” Sounds like an old Monty Python skit? Simply, cask conditioned Scottish Ale with nothing added, unfiltered & naturally carbonated.

May 7th - ”Stole My Heart” Cherry Reincarnation. Drink a pint for a good cause! 100% of cask proceeds will be donated to “Gift of Life Family House”. How about a little “Cherry Reincarnation”? Our brewers added a little bit of cherry into a second running of our high gravity beer “reincarnated” from Imperial Stout. The cherry adds that special somethin’, somethin’ to this tasty cask.

June 4th - Pomegranate Hefeweizen “Persephone” Heaven in a glass? Our brewers added the anti-oxidant qualities of pomegranate to a traditional German wheat beer creating what we think is Heaven in a glass.

June 11th – Blueberry Stout “Hematoma” – Our version of a “black & blue” beer is much nicer then waking up with a black eye…..Fresh blueberries in a cask of Steelworker’s Oatmeal Stout, a peaceful solution to end the day!

June 18th – Orange Golden Ale “Agent Orange” – We are scared to ask how the brewers squeezed oranges into a cask of our refreshing Valley Golden Ale but who are we to question their brilliance? And thank goodness because this is one of our favorite casks. Come in early for this one as the last time it was tapped it only lasted one hour!

June 25th – British vs. American Ale yeast strain India Red Ale “Whale and the Wasp” Not since the revolutionary war has there been such battle. Two casks, same beer made with two different strains of yeast; one British, one American. We will let you decide the victor. Do you think your palate is up to the challenge?

July 2nd – “Hippie-Hophead Explosion” Super hoppy Pale Ale: the perfect tribute to the “Summer of Love”. Balanced by a mild essence of grapefruit and a malty flavor, (and oh by the way, lots of hop bitterness!) Brewed in the tradition of West Coast Pale Ales, we put loads of malt and hops in our kettle to come up with this sensational ale. Brewed with pale and crystal malts and hopped with Tomahawks from Yakima Valley, WA.

July 9th - “Hen Ysgolion ESB” (pronounced “h-ai-n is-go-li-on”, meaning “old school” in Welsh) Oh,
the Celts would be proud! A traditional ESB served “old school”; naturally carbonated, cellar temperatureand hand drawn. Simple, pure & delicious.

July 16th – “Nutter-Butter Stout” 100% all natural, organic peanut butter squeezed into a cask of our Steelworker’s Oatmeal Stout. Nothing goes better than chocolate & peanut butter except for maybe Stout & peanut butter!

July 23rd - “Whale and the Wasp Part Deux” Whale and the Wasp? Not since the revolutionary war has there been such battle. Two casks of CH-47 American Pale Ale; one fermented with a British ale yeast strain, one fermented with an American ale yeast strain…one Brit, one Yank. We will let you decide the victor. Do you think your palate is up to the challenge?

August 6th – (held at Allentown Brew Works) “UNO MAS” –“one more” which is a delicious Golden Ale inundated with pounds of lime, cask conditioned & served at cellar temperature, then garnished with a fresh lime wedge. Wow–”Bartender, I’ll have Uno Mas!”Help the Casa Guadalupe Center Capital Campaign get closer to their financial goal. As they kick off their official campaign of $3.4 million for the new center, this will be a great opportunity for you to learn more about Casa Guadalupe and the great programs for seniors and youth, alike. When you over hop an ESB, woo-la, you get an India Brown Ale, dry & refreshing indeed!

September 17th - “Iron Monkey” India Pale Ale. Iron Monkey + lambic fruits = Brass Monkey but we grabbed a keg of the Iron Monkey out of the fermenter before fruit was added to it. Why? Because it’s simply wonderful naked!

September 24th - “What Did I Do Stout?” Here’s a fun one for you! Our brewer must have sampled a little too much of the cask because he forgot what he put into it. Stop by, enjoy a pint or two, and help us figure out what our Brewer added to our Oatmeal Stout.

“Santa’s riding an iron horse this winter, so we’re brewing up some Harley inspired casks! Taking a cue from engine styles, as the design of Harley-Davidson engines has evolved through the years, the distinctive shape of the valve covers has allowed Harley enthusiasts to classify an engine simply by looking at the shape of the cover.”

December 3rd – “Knucklehead: ESB” A knucklehead engine (1936-1947) has round knobs on the cover resembling knuckles that give the knucklehead its name. There’s a little bitter orange peel in this brew to bring out the hops that also leaves a little citrus on the back end. Get your knuckles wrapped around a mug of this one!

December 10th -“Shovelhead: West End Red” The shovelhead engine (1966-1985) got its name from the distinctive look of the engine’s rocker box covers. These covers resemble the heads of coal shovels, which is how the shovelhead got its name. We shovel loads of Chinook and Cascade hops into this beer to give it a piney, grapefruit aroma with a strong malt back.

December 17th - “Fat Boy” At the time of the Fat Boy model introduction (1990-Present) a story rapidly spread that its silver paint job and other features were inspired by the World War II American B-29 bomber; and that the Fat Boy name was a combination of the names of the atom bombs (Fat Man and Little Boy). Whether it’s urban myth or not, there’s a new IPA at the BBW and it is the BOMB! There were no late hop additions during the boil so all the aroma is due to the dry hopping. Kaboom!! Vroom Vroom!!

Calling all Wanna Be Comedians!
The Lehigh Valley’s ORIGINAL Comedy Open Mic Night

Here’s your chance to try out your materials in the Fishbowl of Comedy!

Tickle Me TRYOUTS – an open mic comedy night – every other Sunday in the Fishbowl at the Bethlehem Brew Works. Local amateur comedians will be given five-minutes to try out their best jokes – no experience necessary, all are welcome!

The Lehigh Valley is becoming known as a comedy destination among comedians. Local amateur performers and established talents from New York City and Philadelphia are all abuzz in online communities about the area’s hunger for nightclub style comedy acts. These comedy makers are excited that they can now play another venue because the Bethlehem Brew Works now hosts the Lehigh Valley’s ORIGINAL Comedy Open Mic Night, Tickle Me Tryouts in our glass enclosed room called “The Fishbowl.” Every other Sunday local amateurs get their chance to tryout their material in front of an audience and test the waters. Newcomers to the comedy scene are encouraged to take the plunge as well, which can add a different type of comedy altogether (kind of night like the laughs you can get from a fabulously off-key karaoke duet of ‘Candle in the Wind’).

Hosting this event is local comedian Randy Tonge, from Breinigsville, who will add wit, style, and guaranteed laughs to the event. In addition to hosting, Tonge is also fishing for new talent for the “Tickle me Tuesdays” events at the Allentown Brew Works, where Tonge is a regular crowd favorite.

The Brew Works is proud to add comedy to our Bethlehem location after seeing such success in Allentown, and we are using the Sunday night open mic night as a way to find fresh talent and allow it to develop. The overwhelming success of the “Tickle Me Tuesdays” shows held in ABW’s second floor High Gravity lounge has shown us that live comedy is something everyone wants or wants in on. Over the past year, thousands (yes, thousands) of comedy seekers have gone to the ABW Tuesday night comedy revue which features a mix of local amateurs and professional comics.

Then every First Monday at 5pm sharp!

Come join us as we tap a special cask at the Brew Works on the Green!

Upcoming Cask:

August 2010 – Blueberry Cobbler – Inspired by one of the first great flavor combinations introduced to every person! Apples and blueberries give refreshing life to this real ale and bring happy smiles. Perfect for the summer at the golf course.

Previous Casks:

July 2010 – Strawberry Blonde - At 4.7%, this blonde ale is dosed with fresh strawberries into the cask to create a fanciful summer brew for the west-enders.

June 2010 - DEEP SPACE Monkey! Our Space Monkey-Raspberry Saison loaded with an excessive amount of fresh raspberries weighing in at 7%ABV. This brew has a spicy flavor and predominate raspberry taste. “In space…no one can hear you belch.”

May 2010 Dry Hopped Hop Explosion! KAA BOOOM!

March 2010 This special cask is a Belgian Style Dubbel, a mahogany colored malt accented brew with a spicy and floral yeast aroma. (7.8%ABV)

“What is cask beer?”

If you love beer then this is your chance to experience drinking a real ale*!

“Cask beers are by nature limited editions. Yeast is still active and alive, conditioning the beer inside them,” says Brewmaster Beau Baden, “So because of the limited supply and the fact that it has a short life once tapped, we have to make a bit of an event out of this.”

Cask beers are served at the traditional “cellar temperature” (50-55º F) and are hand pumped or gravity fed. “This way you don’t add any unnatural carbonation to the beer, and it can be experienced the way beer has been for…well, right back to the beginning of beer itself,” adds brewer Nick Micio, “This allows for the beers to open up and release their floral hop aromas and draw out the malt flavors.”

Cask means container, from the Spanish word cáscara (tree bark), and references to alcohol in casks goes back to the 5th century BC. In the Iron Age, European Celts developed Stout wooden barrels with iron hoops to store goods. It wasn’t until the 1950s that these wooden casks began to be replaced by steel or aluminum casks which were easier to sterilize and better at keeping oxygen out (which causes staling). In the 1960s the first metal ‘kegs’ were introduced which allowed for more efficient cleaning, filling and dispensing. However, these kegs which are typical in design today, usually contain beers that are pasteurized (flash-heated to preserve freshness) and are dispensed by being pushed out with carbon dioxide (which dissolves into the liquid and adds carbonation). By the 1970s the British had had enough. They cried foul and created the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), which set out to save the old traditions (and the flavors, aromas, and mouthfeel therein) by defining real ale as “beer brewed from traditional ingredients, matured by secondary fermentation in the container from which it is dispensed, and served without the use of extraneous carbon dioxide.”

Mug club members (from all 3 locations!) – don’t forget, it’s not just cask night – in addition to great beer, you also get 20% off all regularly priced food items. Just when you thought Mug Club Appreciation Night couldn’t get any better!

Come see why the Brew Works on the Green is quickly becoming one of the Lehigh Valley’s favorite restaurants!

*NOTE: Real Ales are not limited to beers in casks. A secondary fermentation can happen in a bottle just the same. Fegley’s Brew Works has begun a line of bottled beers that are all bottle conditioned. “Right now we have a triple IPA called Hop’solutely and an Imperial Stout we call Insidious,” Baden says. “We’re bottling high alcohol beers that will age very gracefully and gain complexity over time.” Coming up in production will be the Bagpiper’s Scotch Ale, the beer that won medals at the Great American Beer Festival two years in a row (Bronze 2008, Silver 2009). These bottled beers are available at many distributors and in dozens of pubs and restaurants stretching from Scranton to Philadelphia.

Laurence is a high-energy comedian who recently captured a “Top Comic” award by Philadelphia Weekly which said he’ll have you “Laughing so hard your soul hurts.” His comedy has been featured on Comcast On Demand and has placed him in the finals of several notable comedy competitions. Audiences are drawn to Laurence’s signature intensity as he explores topics from being in the Marine Corps to finding God in a flower. Ok, he never found God in a flower but it sounded cool. Despite that, he does talk about deeply personal experiences in a way that relates to everyone. As an actor, Laurence has landed roles on both “Law & Order: CI” and “Forensic Files.” His film work includes “Shooter” with Mark Wahlberg along with key roles in Indie films like “Sheep Skin” and “Karma.” He is currently working on the sitcom pilot “Get a Grip” with 3PPG Productions.

September 21st Headliner – Marc W. Juretus

<img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-6939" title="Marc W. He’s a graduate of Dieruff High School, where he enjoyed quite a few nights of detention. Five hundred-plus shows after a chance meeting with Raymond the Amish Comic at a gym, Marc’s act has evolved into a polished crowd pleasing event. From making fun of his Bi-Racial heritage, family members and his encounters with people he’s found a niche in relating to all types of audiences. Marc’s also appeared on various TV series including Law and Order and Without A Trace. Marc W. Juretus is a comedian on the rise that you should definitely go see.

.

Past TMT Comics include:

August 17th Headliner – Sonya King – Hosted by Kate Lawrence, and featuring Steve Bost (Bethlehem), Ed Pudup (New Jersey), Luis Rivera (Reading), Tyler Rothrock (Nazareth), Craig Sharf (New Jersey) and Gary Snyder (Northampton).

Originally from Selma, Alabama, Sonya King grew up in sunny San Diego just one block from the beach. Combine those two worlds with a healthy dose of dry humor and what do you get? You get funny! Starting in 1999, she began working her way across the nation toiling on the comedy club circuit while performing college dates and corporate events. Sonya won the Carnival Cruise Competition which led to a great deal of work for various cruise lines. She appeared on Good Morning America on ABC, but really stirred things up with her appearance on ABC’s The View with Barbara Walters and Joy Behar. That led to an appearance with Joy at famed Caroline’s Comedy Club in New York City. Sonya has a special place in our hearts as the very first headliner at Tickle Me Tuesdays.

July 20th Headliner – Alex House.

Based in Easton, Alex is a two time winner in the Bud Light’s Ladies Of Laughter Comedy Contest, has participated in the Toyota Comedy Festival, Boston Comedy Festival and the Arizona Women’s Funny Fest. She has also been on ABC’s “The View” twice in the course of two weeks and was one of the East Coast Semi-finalists chosen out of thousands of comics on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing”. When she’s not performing comedy, she studies acting with coach JoAnna Beckson, whose past students include Ray Romano, Dave Chappelle and Brett Butler.

.

.

August 3rd Headliner- Adam Yenser. Also performing: Brett Druck (New Jersey), Pat Janssen (Bethlehem), George Ostertag (Easton), Dan Shelly (Emmaus), Mollie Sperduto (New Jersey) and Randy Tonge (Breinigsville).

A native of Macungie, Pennsylvania, Adam Yenser has worked for The Maury Show, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien. He began performing stand-up comedy at The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City, followed by several appearances at the Allentown Brew Works. He has since gone on to appear at venues around the country including Gotham Comedy Club, The Jon Lovitz Comedy Club, and The Hollywood Improv. Adam holds degrees in Film & Video and Philosophy from Penn State University where he was head writer and producer of the campus sketch comedy show. His stand-up is a mix of sharp observational wit and conservative political humor, however unlike other conservative comedians, he’s funny. Adam currently lives in Los Angeles.

July 6th Headliner – Chip Chantry

To avoid trouble, you have to pick your battles. Philadelphia-based comedian Chip Chantry knows how to do just that. He has a personal vendetta against toddlers, his grandmother, and the Amish. And after listening to his fast-paced, winding stories, so will you. Chip has taken his off-kilter view to comedy clubs and colleges all over the country. When he is not on the road, Chip hosts the monthly “Chip Chantry’s One-Man Show (w/special guests!)”, and writes comedy essays and articles for popular comedy blogs. And remember, toddlers, beware.

Corey has also shared the stage with some of today’s stars, like Mitch Fatel (The Tonight Show), Kevin Brennan (“Best Comedian” Aspen Comedy Festival, HBO), and Jessica Kirson (MAC winner “Best Female Comic”).

March 2nd headliner – Pat House, with guest host Steve Bost!

Pat House began his comedy career/obsession at the age of 19. After four years of daydreaming in high school of being a stand-up comedian, Pat finally took his scribbled notes to an open-mic in October 2004. Having received (what he considered) a decent reaction from the audience, he immediately began seeking comedy stages all over the Philadelphia area. Attending class during the day while telling jokes at night, Pat hosted Comedy Central Live!!! in Philadelphia, took second place in Howard Stern’s “Kill or Be Killed” competition and was named one of the top up-and-coming comedians in the city by Philadelphia Weekly. By age 22, Pat was making a name for himself, performing in comedy clubs all over the Philadelphia-area while making regular local television and radio appearances such as The Kidd Chris Show on 94.1 WYSP and DigPhillyTV on NBC.Now at 25, Pat is performing as much as possible to avoid using his college education.

March 16th headliner – Debbie Kasper

Debbie Kasper is one of the most versatile entertainers in the country. Besides being a two-time Emmy nominated writer, an award-winning comedian, character actor, celebrity joke-writer, and an International humor author, she is a stand-out stand-up comic who has been blowing audiences away for almost 20 years! After moving to Los Angeles, Debbie became a staff writer on the seminal sitcom “Roseanne” and was then hand-picked by Rosie O’Donnell to write for “The Rosie O’Donnell Show,” for which she was nominated for two Emmys. She was awarded the best one-person show DRAMA-LOGUE Award in Los Angeles for her show “Without Me, My Show is Nothing,” which garnered rave reviews on both coasts. Her television stand-up credits include Evening at the Improv, VH-1’s Stand-Up Spotlight, and several appearances on Lifetime’s “Girl’s Night Out,” plus dozens of other national and regional television, radio and cable spots.

She is one of the few female headliners to transcend the battle of the sexes and expose people as the hilarious creatures they are. Originally from New Jersey, she spent many years in New York City honing her craft, and developing a repertoire of characters that she threads through her act like a master weaver. Her prolific writing ability allows her to create fresh material for each and every situation she’s in, always uniting the audience with immediate observations.

The Junior League of the Lehigh Valley will host the 6th Annual Childhood Obesity and Nutrition Education Initiative.

Junior League Partners with Local Organizations to Educate Children on Importance of Eating Well and Staying Healthy as Part of Kids in the Kitchen Activities!

The Junior League of The Lehigh Valley (JLLV) will host Kids in the Kitchen, an educational initiative on childhood obesity and nutrition created by the Association of Junior Leagues International. The event, which will be held October 9, 2010 from 9:30 AM until 12:00 PM at The Allentown Municipal Golf Course and Brew Works on the Green, is free and open to children ages 7 thru 12.

Golfing & Grilling Fall 2010: A fun-filled day of hands-on activities will introduce kids to the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Chef Bert, head Chef at Brew Works on the Green, will lead a hands-on preparation and tasting of several simple recipes along with training in the importance of grilling, kitchen safety and hygiene. The delicious and nutritious food will be provided by Wegman’s of Lehigh Valley. Nutritionist,Tara Miltenberger, RD, LDN a Community Educator with the Allen Center for Nutrition at Cedar Crest College will bring interactive, state-of-the-art health and wellness education to the children. Allentown Municipal’s own Golf Pro, Jeff Wambold, will facilitate the fitness part of the morning teaching the kids that Golfing can be a fun and exciting exercise. Our resident Gardner, Earl Blankenbiller will introduce the children to the benefits of container gardening, as well as, create a starter garden.

Designed to help raise awareness and help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues, Kids in the Kitchen will bring together organizations from across the Lehigh Valley which are committed to addressing childhood obesity. Nearly two-thirds of children and adolescents in North and South America will be overweight by 2011 and at increased risk of contracting Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, the numerous ailments related to high cholesterol and social problems that affect self-esteem.

Parents can register their children for the event by visiting the JLLV website http://www.jllvpa.org/
