Fegley Family Receives Award for Recycling

On Saturday November 15th, Fegley’s Brew Works received recognition from the City of Allentown Bureau of Recycling & Solid Waste “for being a recycling friendly business, for their green efforts and commitment to recycling.” An award for Fegley’s Brew Works efforts was presented to owner Rich Fegley by Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski.

Mitch Hanna, Hamilton District Main Street Manager of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce and representatives from Allentown Recycling Center were present to congratulate the Fegley family. Rich, Peg and Dick Fegley were in attendance.

Fegley’s Allentown Brew Works has been recycling cardboard, paper, glass, metals, electronics, etc. since opening in 2007 and uses recycled materials and re-purposes whenever possible. They compost food scraps and compostable materials from both Allentown and Bethlehem Brew Works with Rodale of Emmaus. By diverting food scraps and compostable material from the waste stream, Fegley’s are keeping nearly a half million pounds out of the landfills. Over 1,120 gallons each week of food scraps are used by Rodale Institute in their fields.

They are proud supporters of local business and have partnered with Koehler Farms of Bethlehem to “upcyle” the malt used by their breweries to use at Koehler Farms as feed for livestock. Fegley’s brew pubs then purchase the meat back from Koehler and uses it on their menus. The result is healthier, more natural food, and zero grain waste from the brewery.
